Truck Accidents: The Many Causes

Law Blog

If you have been hurt by a large commercial truck, you are not alone. Although truckers are usually safe drivers, not all of them are as careful as they should be. When big trucks cause wrecks, the results can be tragic. Read on to find out why these big trucks crash so much.

Tired Drivers

Strict rules are in place to keep truck drivers from driving too many hours at a time. However, truckers are also aware that their jobs could be in jeopardy if they don't deliver their cargo on time. That can cause them to drive past the allowed hours. Unfortunately, tired drivers can also be careless drivers and they can even fall asleep while they are driving down the road.

On the other hand, drivers that struggle to stay awake for their long shifts may depend on illegal medications. These medications can have side effects that also affect the driving behavior of truckers.

Improper Loading

Big trucks carry heavy loads. As the truck goes around corners, some loads can shift inside the cargo area. When that occurs, the truck may roll over or jackknife. Any passenger vehicles in the vicinity can be hit or even crushed by one of these large trucks.

Distracted Drivers

Most modern truck cabs are outfitted with a myriad of electronic devices. Many are needed to help the driver navigate to their destinations. Some are put in place to track drivers, and many allow the driver to remain in communication with their home offices.

Just as with drivers of passenger vehicles, truckers may be distracted by cell phones and other devices meant to be used when the vehicle is parked. Some may watch movies to relieve the boredom of long hauls. Anything that distracts the driver from the road is a hazard.

Poorly Maintained Trucks

Most trucks owned by large firms are kept in good repair and inspected regularly. However, not all trucks are in good condition. When the brakes fail or when they don't work as well on these big trucks, they may crash into other vehicles before they come to a stop.

What Victims Can Do

If you or a loved one has been involved in a commercial trucking accident, take action quickly. Trucking companies employ lawyers to defend their truckers involved in accidents and you will need legal support as well.

You may be going up against a large trucking company with plenty of resources to fight the case. Don't make a mistake. Seek help from a truck injury lawyer.
